The excavator engine turbocharger is essentially an air compressor. Its core function is to use the exhaust gas energy to increase the air intake and greatly improve the engine power. It is mainly composed of two major parts: turbine and compressor.

Common faults and diagnosis

The working environment of the turbocharger is harsh, and the common faults and troubleshooting are as follows:

1. Decrease in boosting pressure (insufficient power): check whether the air filter and intercooler are blocked; check the wear of turbines and bearings.
2. Loud operating noise: check whether the exhaust pipe is leaking; check whether the impeller is deformed and scratched or the bearing is poorly lubricated.
3. The temperature is too high: check the time of engine oil supply and the quality of fuel injection; check whether the lubricating oil pressure is normal (usually not less than 200 kPa).
4. Abnormal damage: Most of the bearings are abnormally worn due to unclean lubricating oil or insufficient pressure.

Maintenance

1. Engine turbocharger maintenance: Strictly refer to the maintenance manual, keep it clean and mark it.
2. Parts maintenance: check the turbine/compressor impellers, bearings, seals, etc. If the key parts are damaged, they need to be replaced.
3. Maintenance points: Be sure to use clean high-quality engine oil; clean or replace the air filter regularly; apply clean lubricating oil on the matching surface when disassembling and installing.
